Catholic Leadership Institute (CLI) is pleased to announce its partnership with the Diocese of Shreveport, LA, marking the 40th U.S. Diocese to partner with the organization to deliver Good Leaders, Good Shepherds, CLI’s two-year clergy leadership development program. In 2006, Catholic Leadership Institute introduced Good Leaders,Good Shepherds nationally after piloting the program in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. After the pilot was launched the Institute set an aggressive goal to reach 40 dioceses by June 2009.
“The goal has always been and continues to be, to reach as many dioceses as possible. Good Leaders,Good Shepherds fills a critical need in our Church today. With the declining number of priests, shepherds are asked to do more with less. They need these leadership skills so they can effectively and confidently lead their faith communities in carrying out the mission of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church,” said Fr. Bill Dickinson, National Director for Leadership Development.
With the support of the bishops and their presbyterates, over 1,000 priests from around the country have enrolled in the program. “In this Year for Priests, I am happy that the priests participating in Good Leaders, Good Shepherds are enjoying a renewal of priestly fraternity and identity,” said Most Rev. J. Peter Sartain, Bishop of Joliet, IL. “My priests are learning new leadership skill sets in a professional and pastoral way, and they are being better equipped to lead and govern their parishes and ministries. With my priests, I continue to be grateful for the ministry of Catholic Leadership Institute.”
Good Leaders, Good Shepherds is designed to equip clergy with the relevant, practical and pastoral leadership skills necessary to shepherd a parish and support the governing office of their priesthood. During the two-year program priests learn about the various contexts in which they lead, and specific skill sets within each context that will help them lead most effectively.
Catholic Leadership Institute also offers a leadership skill building program, Tending the Talents, to parish and diocesan staff leaders. Along with the Archdiocese of Detroit, the Archdioceses of Galveston-Houston and Boston and the Diocese of Orlando have enrolled over 150 participants in this leadership formation initiative, which serves as a complementary curriculum to Good Leaders, Good Shepherds
