Holy Family University to Honor Anti-Genocide Leader at Commencement
PHILADELPHIA—A leader in global efforts to end genocide and crimes against humanity will be honored at Holy Family University’s 2010 Commencement ceremonies, scheduled for Tuesday, May 18, in Verizon Hall of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, 260 South Broad Street, Philadelphia.
John Prendergast, Co-founder of the Enough Project, will be honored at the 12:30 p.m. undergraduate ceremony, where 438 graduates will receive their bachelor’s degrees. The graduate ceremony, where 374 master’s degrees will be awarded, is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
As director of African Affairs at the National Security Council and special advisor at the Department of State during the Clinton administration, Prendergast was involved in many peace processes in Africa. Since the early 1990s, he has also worked for members of the United States Congress, the United Nations, human rights organizations, and think tanks. A senior advisor at the International Crisis Group, he focuses his current activism on the African nations of Sudan, Somalia, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, and Zimbabwe. Prendergast has published eight books about the continent, including Not On Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond, a New York Times bestseller. He also produces documentaries and consults on scripts for films and television programs, including NBC’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
Other Commencement honorees this year include the following:
• Sister Janice Fulmer, CSFN, Ph.D., Superior General of the Congregation of Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, the religious order that oversees the University.
• Timothy Flanagan, the visionary founder and chairman of the Catholic Leadership Institute, a nonprofit lay association of the faithful headquartered in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
