CLI Takes Part In Historic Papal Visit [ Back to News Articles ]

04.16.08 - Catholic Leadership Institute was privileged to join thousands of faithful on the White House lawn on Wednesday, April 16 to formally welcome Pope Benedict XVI to the United States. More than 60 individuals representing CLI took part in the Pope’s historic visit. Steve Hyde, Board Member Emeritus shared this historic experience with his daughter and wife and also attended the Mass at Yankee Stadium. “Experiencing both of these events as a family was very special and a moment to cherish for the rest of our lives,” said Mr. Hyde.

Pope Benedict arrived to the United States in time to close out the year-long bicentennial celebrations of four archdioceses: New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Louisville, KY. All were born from the Baltimore Diocese, the nation’s first diocese, in 1808. The Pope expressed his hope for a growing and changing flock. “The original small flock has developed enormously, enriching itself with the faith and traditions of the successive influx of immigrants. To that church which now faces the challenges of the present, I had the joy of proclaiming again Christ, our hope, yesterday, today and forever,” he said.

Timothy Flanagan, Founder and Chairman of Catholic Leadership Institute, was among the 45,000 individuals present at Nationals Stadium. “It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate mass with the Holy Father. To hear his message of hope and love for the world was both inspiring and uplifting.”
