The article below reflects on the 2026 Episcopal Ongoing Formation and Support Session (EOFS). In a rapidly changing cultural landscape, bishops are called to shepherd their flocks with courage, clarity, and apostolic zeal, and these sessions provide them with the time and resources to renew their episcopacy, dialogue with brother bishops, and refocus their ministry.

Earlier this month, more than 30 bishops from the United States, Canada, and Haiti gathered in Ponte Vedra, Florida, for a week of ongoing episcopal formation centered on A Bishop’s Role in an Apostolic Age: Fostering Presbyteral Zeal and Shaping Diocesan Priorities. The presence of both senior and newly ordained bishops enriched the fraternal dialogue with wisdom and fresh perspectives.

We know that when bishops are formed to be confident, competent shepherds, they are better able to address the needs of their flocks with wisdom and compassion. EOFS offered each of the bishop’s time to reflect on their own role and the ways they are being stretched to grow in their responsibilities toward their presbyterate and parishes, with applications particular to these modern times.

One bishop described the session as a meaningful “shift” from previous gatherings focused on learning about others. Instead, they were invited to examine their own pastoral priorities, readiness, and focus. In one session, bishops even wrote letters to their successors, reflecting on the question: What is my responsibility now—and what may be hindering it?

Throughout the week, conversations highlighted how various bishops across North America have made bold but incremental changes in their dioceses that are already bearing abundant fruit for their priests and people. The bishops addressed specific pastoral challenges and made tangible solutions with pastoral potential.

At the end of the week, the bishops shared that they felt challenged to shift their mindset from one of scarcity to one of growth, also acknowledging that the way they approach their role must be bold in doing so. At Catholic Leadership Institute, it is our honor and privilege to walk alongside these Shepherds as they lead with renewed vision and hope. Please join us in praying for them and the people they serve. Together, we can continue forging a bold future for the Church.
